Warli Painting
Warli Painting is a traditional folk art or tribal art. It is one of the oldest forms of art. This art originated from the “Warli Tribe” which belongs to the North Sahyadri range, Maharashtra. This art is thought to have been created first in 2500-3000 BCE and 4,000-5,000 years old. Although it became famous in the 1970s.
Warli’s Art depicts a concentration on the equilibrium among mankind, nature, and the universe. It signifies their perspective through its symbolic motifs, concepts, and characteristic style. Through Nature, it depicts things like the sun, moon, river, trees, and animals. Through mankind, they depict the art of living, like farming, hunting, fishing, and village life. It also illustrates the weddings, festivals, harvests, and celebrations among tribal people. Warli art reflects the passage of age-old traditions and information from one generation to the next, despite modernization.
It is made from basic materials and processes. It is performed on tribal people’s walls. For making a smooth, earthy texture background, cow dung and red ochre (geru) were mixed and painted on the walls. Some people nowadays use canvas or any cloth material. The paint used is white pigmented. Acrylic or synthetic paint is employed in modern times. It is painted by employing bamboo sticks or brushes. Geometric designs are employed here.
